Lullaby
Evan Costigant
Pablo Neruda
the Chilean poet
and Nobel prize winner
had three wives
and three houses
and I liked the
one he liked best
the best,
where far-flung spindles
came home
to roost.
Roomfuls of reminders:
a shrunk trunk of
pin-driven beetles, bugs
and buttered-down flies,
peg-driven planks
for his nautical
knick knackery:
spines
shells
tusks
globes
charts
telescopes
and ships
gobbled up in glass.
And no, not ashtrays,
but piano-leg props;
for a house all at sea.
Evan Costigan is a thirty year old writer currently on the move in South America for the foreseeable future. Her main interests lie in writing poetry as well as short stories with a strong travel component.
